Mission Statement

The mission of the program is to provide students critical sport management knowledge and skills in addition to opportunities to engage in service, professional development, leadership, scholarship, and mentoring that will enable a successful career in the sport industry. In that effort, we cooperatively engage our students and professional partners in experiences that promote the goals and objectives of the program

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Use principals of interpersonal communication and mass communication.
  • Develop skills in the selection and use of technology as tools for effective communication.
      Content Discipline Knowledge/Skills
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of professional organizations and their importance in sport management.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of professional practice in the sport industry.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of legal concepts in sport areas they are most likely to encounter in practice.
  • Understand that sport is influenced by cultural traditions, social values, and psychosocial experiences.
  • Understand that budget and finance are critical to all sport related industries.
  • Understand operations, structures, and functions of sport organizations.

  • Apply fundamental marketing concepts to the sport industry.
  • Use data, research, and theory to make management decisions.

    Assessment Approaches

    Indirect Assessment: Sport management candidates are required to complete a program evaluation, which is based on the program's goals and objectives. This information is viewed by the program coordinator and faculty and is used to make program changes as necessary. Direct Assessment: Sport Management faculty have identified "critical tasks" that are embedded in the sport management core courses that assess each of the Academic Learning Compacts.
