College: Brooks College of Health
Degree: Bachelor of Science in Health
Major: Health Science
Concentration: Public Health
Effective Term: Fall 2018
The Osprey Map provides a term-by-term sample schedule for each undergraduate academic program at the University of North Florida. It is designed to guide students in the selection of courses each term. The "Mile Marker" courses in the right-hand column are those courses that should be completed before or by the end of that term. Following the sample schedule, and completing the mile marker courses at the appropriate point of your undergraduate career, will facilitate graduation in four years. The term-by-term model assumes full-time enrollment. For students enrolled part-time, the sample schedule and mile markers should be followed based on the number of credits completed. The Osprey Map should be used in consultation with an academic advisor.

The BSH in Public Health combines a broad spectrum of liberal arts, sciences, social sciences and health science to prepare undergraduate students in the field of health education and health promotion. Students gain experience and skills in promoting healthy behaviors and preventing both chronic and infectious diseases and injury, while learning the theories and research methods necessary for the development of this field. Students will complete courses in nutrition, sexuality education, substance abuse and violence prevention, exercise science, fitness and aging. The goal of the Public Health program is to provide students with the education needed for entry-level public health positions and for graduate studies. Of major concern to any society is the health and well-being of its citizens. Although the human lifespan has increased, chronic and degenerative diseases, and continuing and emerging infectious disease and injuries are urgent problems that must be addressed. Enhancement of health at both the individual and public levels is the major focus of this program. At the completion of this degree program, students are eligible to take the national examination for certification in health education (CHES). The Public Health curriculum includes a required Minor in Health Education.

Career Planning
Engaging in career planning activities is significant to student success. UNF offers customized career centers to deliver targeted programs, events, services and resources. First-Year and Exploratory students should visit the Career Services webpage and Sophomore or higher level students with a declared BCH major should visit the Brooks College of Health Professional Development Services office.

Students should refer to their personalized Degree Evaluation provided by an academic advisor and to other university resources for additional university and college-specific policies and procedures. Visit the undergraduate university catalog for more information.

Summer terms may be utilized to facilitate graduation in four years.
  • Visit the university catalog for a list of General Education requirements. An Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public university, state college or community college satisfies UNF general education and Gordon Rule requirements. Math selection for First Time in College (FTIC) students is contingent upon Math Placement exam results, the student’s major and credit received through accelerated mechanisms (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, etc). Visit the Public Health webpage for a complete list of prerequisites.

  • Civic Literacy Requirement: Prior to graduation from a Florida state university, students must demonstrate competency in civic literacy through successful completion of a civic literacy course (AMH 2020 or POS 2041) or by achieving a passing score on an assessment. Consult an academic advisor, the university catalog and visit the Civic Literacy webpage for additional information.

  • Students must earn additional Free Elective credit if needed to satisfy the university minimum 120 total semester hours for graduation.

  • The Public Health program includes an internship that allows students the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in a health education/health promotion setting. Faculty require completion of HSC4814 Community Health Internship in the student's last academic term. Students may petition to take a maximum of 6 semester hours of Health Science Electives (HSC/HSA prefixes) at the 3000/4000 level with internship. All university general education, program prerequisite/requisite, core, major and minor courses must be completed with a "C" grade or better prior to internship. A minimum 2.0 GPA is required prior to internship.
