The Osprey Map provides a term-by-term sample schedule for each undergraduate academic program at the University of North Florida. It is designed to guide students in the selection of courses each term. The "Mile Marker" courses in the right-hand column are those courses that should be completed before or by the end of that term. Following the sample schedule, and completing the mile marker courses at the appropriate point of your undergraduate career, will facilitate graduation in four years. The term-by-term model assumes full-time enrollment. For students enrolled part-time, the sample schedule and mile markers should be followed based on the number of credits completed. The Osprey Map should be used in consultation with an academic advisor.

Chemistry is the central science that deals with the study of the properties and behavior of matter. It serves as a bridge between mathematics, physics, and the biological sciences. Knowledge of chemistry has always been fundamental to the investigation of the physical world. Chemistry is unique among the sciences because it involves interactions between matter and energy at the atomic level. Even with only a limited number of connecting atoms, a vast number of molecules can be generated, depending on the connectivity, type of bonding, and relative orientations and spatial arrangements. This creates a huge diversity in the molecular structures, leading to a vast array of properties evident in everyday life. Traditionally, chemistry has been divided into five specialties: Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry. In recent years, these traditional specialties have become increasingly interconnected, creating new interdisciplinary concentrations in areas like bio-organic, bio-inorganic, bio-analytical, and bio-physical chemistry. Biochemistry is the study of biological systems on a molecular level. Competency in the field of biochemistry requires an in-depth understanding of chemistry, a fundamental knowledge of biology, and the ability to recognize the interconnections between the two disciplines. This concentration is designed to prepare students who wish to pursue careers in biochemical and/or biomedical research including such specific areas as pharmaceutical sciences, disease diagnostics, drug development, DNA-based forensics, proteomics, and clinical chemistry. The prerequisite courses required by most chemistry graduate programs are fulfilled by concentration. The Biochemistry concentration is designed for students interested in bio-medically related research careers. Students will gain a deeper and broader understanding of biochemical principles and techniques through the increased emphasis on biology and biochemistry courses. Upon completion, students will be better prepared to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers that do not fall within the traditional confines of chemistry or biology degree programs. Career Planning
Engaging in career planning activities is significant to student success. UNF offers customized career centers to deliver targeted programs, events, services and resources. First-Year students should visit the Career Services webpage and Sophomore or higher level students with a declared COAS major should visit the College of Arts and Sciences Career Success Center.

Summer terms may be utilized to facilitate graduation in four years. Course offerings in Summer terms are subject to availability of resources.

  • Visit the university catalog for a list of General Education requirements. An Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public university, state college or community college satisfies UNF general education and Gordon Rule requirements. Math selection for First Time in College (FTIC) students is contingent upon Math Placement exam results, the student’s major and credit received through accelerated mechanisms (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, etc).

  • Visit the Chemistry Department webpage for a complete list of Chemistry prerequisites and Chemistry Major Electives. If preparation for MAC 2311 Calculus I is needed take MAC 1147 Precalculus. Prerequisite for CHM 2045/2045L General Chemistry I with lab is completion of high school chemistry with a minimum grade of "B" or CHM 1025/1025L Introduction to Chemistry with lab. MAC 1105 College Algebra or MAC equivalent is also an enforced prerequisite for CHM 2045/2045L. Prerequisite for PHY 2048/2048L Calculus-Based Physics with lab is completion of high school physics with a minimum grade of "B" or PHY 1020 Introduction to Physics. MAC 2311 Calculus I is also an enforced prerequisite for PHY 2048/2048L.

  • Students participating in Chemistry research must register for either CHM4910 Chemistry Research (for 1.0 - 4.0 credit hours) or CHM4911 Chemical Research Experience (for 0.0 credit hours). Consult Chemistry faculty regarding which Research course is appropriate.

  • Civic Literacy Requirement: Prior to graduation from a Florida state university, students must demonstrate competency in civic literacy through successful completion of a civic literacy course (AMH 2020 or POS 2041) or by achieving a passing score on an assessment. Consult an academic advisor, the university catalog and visit the Civic Literacy webpage for additional information.

  • A minimum of 120 hours (48 hours at the upper 3000/4000 level) is required for the bachelor's degree in Chemistry. For additional information visit the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Office webpage.

  • Students should consult Chemistry department faculty to discuss readiness to complete CHM4931 Senior Seminar in Chemistry.
