College: Arts and Sciences
Degree: Bachelor of Music Education
Major: Music Education
Effective Term: Spring 2011
The Osprey Map provides a term-by-term sample schedule for each undergraduate academic program at the University of North Florida. It is designed to guide students in the selection of courses each term. The "Mile Marker" courses in the right-hand column are those courses that should be completed before or by the end of that term. Following the sample schedule, and completing the mile marker courses at the appropriate point of your undergraduate career, will facilitate graduation in four years. The term-by-term model assumes full-time enrollment. For students enrolled part-time, the sample schedule and mile markers should be followed based on the number of credits completed. The Osprey Map should be used in consultation with an academic advisor.

The Music Education major prepares students for a life in music. UNF graduates of the Bachelor of Music Education (BME) program will demonstrate mastery of music content knowledge and teaching skills that leads to effective instruction in music education. The core learning objectives of the Music Education program are correlated to the National Association of Schools of Music standards and the Florida Accomplished Practices at the pre-professional level. Click on the Students tab of the Career Services webpage for major exploration and employment information.

Students should refer to their personalized Degree Evaluation provided by an academic advisor and to other university resources for additional university and college-specific policies. Visit the undergraduate university catalog for more information.

Summer terms may be utilized to facilitate graduation in four years.

  • Visit the university catalog for a complete list of General Education requirements. An Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public university, state college or community college satisfies UNF general education and Gordon Rule requirements. General Education Math selection for First Time in College (FTIC) students is contingent upon Math Placement exam results, SAT/ACT math scores, the student’s major and/or credit received through accelerated mechanisms (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, etc). Music Education majors will satisfy 3 semester hours of General Education Humanities with with MUT1111 Music Theory I or MUH3211 Music History I. MUH2501 World Music will satisfy 3 semester hours of General Education Social Sciences B (Cultural Diversity) for Music majors. Music Education majors must complete all General Education course work with a grade of C or higher. A grade of D is acceptable in some General Education course work to meet university requirements, however D grades are not acceptable for Education majors.

  • Visit the Department of Music webpage for a complete list of Music Education prerequisites. Prerequisite courses EDF1005 Intro to Professional Education and EDF2085 Intro to Diversity for Educators require 20 hours of community field work each. All freshmen and sophomores (students with 0-59 credit hours) should consult their academic advisor in the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) or the UNF Honors Program.

  • Admission into the Music Education major requires a successful performance audition on an appropriate instrument or voice. A piano proficiency exam is required. Students without piano proficiency must complete four semesters of Class Piano. A Music Theory proficiency exam is also required.

  • Admission into Music Education also requires a minimum of 60 semester hours or a state of Florida AA degree with a grade point average of 2.50 or better and passing scores on all four parts of the General Knowledge (GK) test of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination by Term 5. Program admission requires a decision by a college administrator or faculty member. Students are not guaranteed admission into this program, and can not degree progress into Term 5 (61-75 hours) until admitted into this program. Find specific admission criteria for this program on your Degree Evaluation, Department of Music website, university catalog or consult your academic advisor. For more information visit the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Office webpage.

  • All music education students are required to enroll in a major ensemble for every semester in residence except for the internship semester. Placement in selective ensembles is determined by competitive audition. Music courses are sequential. Required Music courses are offered Fall and Spring Terms only.

  • Students must notify the Department of Music 24 hours in advance if the first day of class will be missed. Failure to do so may forfeit the student's place in that class.

  • A minimum grade of "C" is required in all academic course work and a minimum grade of "B" is required in applied music areas for the Bachelor of Music Education (BME). Students must maintain a minimum GPA of a 2.50 or better for each semester they are enrolled in the program. Review the Student Probation Policy and the Sophomore Review Policy located in the Department of Music Student Handbook.

  • A level 2 background check (including fingerprints) done and verified by the school district in which the field/clinical experiences will be completed is required prior to the assignment of any student to a field/clinical experience. Students not cleared by the school district will not be permitted access to schools.

  • All course work including successful completion of Field Labs I and II (EDF3945 and EDF3946) are prerequisites for Student Internship (Term 8). Courses with field lab requirements must be completed during fall and spring terms. The Director of the Office of Educational Field Experiences (Building 57) for the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) facilitates the field experience placement of music education students in local schools. The application for internship must be filed by the fourth Friday of the semester prior to the semester of enrollment for internship. For more information visit the COEHS Office of Educational Field Experiences website.

  • Music Education majors are required to complete Senior Recital in applied music in the last semester of applied study.

  • Passing the Professional Education Test (PEd) and the Subject Area Examination (SAE) in Music K-12 of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE) is required for the completion of internship and graduation.

  • A minimum of 120 hours (48 hours at the upper 3000/4000 level) is required for the bachelor's degree. Music Education majors must complete a total of 133 semester hours. Students must complete at least 25 percent of the required degree credit hours in residence at UNF.
