Concentration: Sculpture
Effective Term: Fall 2009
The Osprey Map provides a term-by-term sample schedule for each undergraduate academic program at the University of North Florida. It is designed to guide students in the selection of courses each term. The "Mile Marker" courses in the right-hand column are those courses that should be completed before or by the end of that term. Following the sample schedule, and completing the mile marker courses at the appropriate point of your undergraduate career, will facilitate graduation in four years. The term-by-term model assumes full-time enrollment. For students enrolled part-time, the sample schedule and mile markers should be followed based on the number of credits completed. The Osprey Map should be used in consultation with an academic advisor.

Contemporary Sculpture is interdisciplinary in nature; materials and process follow concept. In this way, we teach our students to take their ideas from initial concept through fruition, emphasizing that the medium should be appropriate to the idea and vice versa. Through research and practice, students create work that is engaging and well-crafted. Technical skill and conceptual skill are integral elements of the sculpture educational experience at UNF. We seek students who are curious, hard-working and passionate about art. Students applying to graduate schools in the Arts, should complete the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) rather than the Bachelor of Arts (BA). Visit the Sculpture webpage and speak with Sculpture faculty for more information. Click on the Students tab of the Career Services webpage for major exploration information.

Students should refer to their personalized Degree Evaluation provided by an advisor and to other university resources for additional university and college-specific policies.Visit the undergraduate university catalog for more information.

Summer terms may be utilized to facilitate graduation in four years.

  • Visit the university catalog for a list of General Education requirements. Art majors will satisfy 3 semester hours of General Education Humanities (Non Applied Fine Art) with Program Prerequisites. An Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public university, state college or community college satisfies UNF general education and Gordon Rule requirements. General Education Math selection for First Time in College (FTIC) students is contingent upon Math Placement exam results, SAT/ACT math scores, the student’s major and/or credit received through accelerated mechanisms (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, etc). All freshmen and sophomores (students with 0-59 credit hours) should consult their academic advisor in the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) or the UNF Honors Program.

  • All BA students in the College of Arts and Sciences are required to complete the foreign language or foreign culture requirement with grades of C or higher. Students opting to complete the 8 semester hours of foreign language must select one sequence of Spanish, French, Chinese, German, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese, Russian, or American Sign Language. Part 1 of languages are typically offered in the fall and part 2 in the spring. Foreign Culture (FC) Option: students who successfully completed 2 years of foreign language in high school have the option to take foreign culture courses instead of college level foreign language. Foreign cultures contain (FC) in the course title. A complete list of foreign culture courses can be found in the Arts & Sciences Advising Office.

  • Art students are encouraged to study a language through the Intermediate level (or demonstrate equivalent proficiency) and to undertake an international educational experience (Study Abroad). Visit the International Center's Study Abroad webpage for additional information.

  • Students may take ART3707C Sculpture I as early as freshman year. Faculty recommend completion of ART 4710C Sculpture III multiple times, for a maximum of 12 credit hours. ART3707C Sculpture I and ART3709C Sculpture II may be completed only one-time, each. When taking Free Electives, faculty recommend completion of the following Art Electives: ART 4736C Enlivened Spaces, ART 3714C Sculpture: Casting, and additional credit in ART 4710C Sculpture III. Students may also complete ART4929C Senior Project in Term 8 to satisfy Free Elective credit. See an academic advisor, or Sculpture faculty for more information.

  • Independent study courses in any fine arts area require prior approval of the department chairperson.

  • Department of Art and Design first day attendance rule: any student who misses the first day without advanced notice to a department representative will be administratively dropped from the course.

  • A minor is required for this degree. The minor must be selected from the list of approved minors, including those outside the college of the major. See a list of minors in the undergraduate catalog. Minors are generally completed during the last 60 hrs of your program. Your minor may require prerequisites, so choosing a minor early is beneficial. See your academic advisor to declare a minor. Double majors are exempt from a minor.

  • A minimum of 120 hours (48 hours at the upper 3000/4000 level) is required for the bachelor's degree. Students may need to complete Free Elective credit at the upper level (3000/4000) to satisfy the minimum 48 semester hours of upper level hours for graduation. For additional information, visit the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Office webpage.
