College: Arts and Sciences
Degree: Bachelor of Social Work
Major: Social Work
Effective Term: Fall 2013
The Osprey Map provides a term-by-term sample schedule for each undergraduate academic program at the University of North Florida. It is designed to guide students in the selection of courses each term. The "Mile Marker" courses in the right-hand column are those courses that should be completed before or by the end of that term. Following the sample schedule, and completing the mile marker courses at the appropriate point of your undergraduate career, will facilitate graduation in four years. The term-by-term model assumes full-time enrollment. For students enrolled part-time, the sample schedule and mile markers should be followed based on the number of credits completed. The Osprey Map should be used in consultation with an academic advisor.

The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) is a limited access program preparing students for a generalist practice in social work, and can speed the path to an MSW degree by one year. It provides fundamental training in the theory and practice of social work with diverse individuals, groups, families, and communities in a variety of settings. The program includes a substantial field education component, placing students in the kinds of agencies where they would be working as professionals. Visit the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work webpage for additional information and admission criteria. Click on the Students tab of the Career Services webpage for major exploration information.

Students should refer to their personalized Degree Evaluation provided by an advisor and to other university resources for additional university and college-specific policies. Visit the undergraduate university catalog for more information.

Summer terms may be utilized to facilitate graduation in four years.

  • Visit the university catalog for a list of General Education requirements. An Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public university, state college or community college satisfies UNF general education and Gordon Rule requirements. General Education Math selection for First Time in College (FTIC) students is contingent upon Math Placement exam results, SAT/ACT math scores, the student’s major and/or credit received through accelerated mechanisms (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, etc). BSW students will satisfy 3 semester hours of Introductory Social Science, and 4 semester hours of natural science general education with Program Prerequisites. All freshmen and sophomores (students with 0-59 credit hours) should consult their academic advisor in the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) or the UNF Honors Program.

  • Students may take SOW2031 Introduction to Social Welfare and Social Work as a Free Elective. This course is not required for the BSW.

  • The BSW requires 450 hours of field education in accordance with the accreditation standards of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

  • A minimum of 120 hours (48 hours at the upper 3000/4000 level) is required for the bachelor's degree. Students may need to complete Free Elective credit at the upper level (3000/4000) to satisfy the minimum 48 semester hours of upper level hours for graduation. For additional information visit the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Office webpage.
